About Vault of Scrolls

Writers are united by a common ambition to share great stories.

Yet, even for writers read by many, as we spend long hours staring at blank pages, clumsy strings of words, and red corrections, the only person we share our stories with is ourself. It takes another writer to understand the struggle, the isolation, the constant doubt. Writing is often a lonely endeavor.

In February 2023, I stumbled across a Reddit post looking for writing buddies. The post had over a hundred upvotes and nearly as many comments expressing the same sentiment, and it made me realize writers needed a better way to connect with each other.

I reached out to many of these commenters and we started a writing group on Discord. We called it Vault of Scrolls (VoS).

At the time, we were using a Google Doc to keep track of all the different writers and their projects. We looked through the list and tried to “pair up” writing buddies based on their interests. This list grew increasingly large and difficult to manage, so we created a web app to simplify the process and generate automatic buddy recommendations for writers. Thus, the VoS directory was born.

I owe much of my growth as a writer to the kind people who supported me throughout my ongoing journey and helped me improve my work. To all writing buddies and beta readers out there: thank you for your generosity, courage, and honesty.

As I once told some of our writers, I think it’s incredible that total strangers are willing to read and critique each other’s books, books which can be longer than 100,000 words. Some people do this with no expectation, and others are simply seeking a kindred soul to share in the journey of their own story.

It is my sincerest hope that VoS can create these connections between more people and help them share their stories while continuing to grow.

We are the Big Bang, and we are chaos.

Don’t write alone.
