Currently 20k-ish into story, having doubts as I go about everything flowing into second part the way I like so going slow. Everything up to conclusion is extensively outlined, but Kate 'wakes up' in the In Between, where 'displaced' souls go. The Guardian explains that she died, but her essence/soul slipped through a crack in the universe. The only way it can move on is if she lives a life again, in a new world. But...she wakes up in her new world as a child, who doesn't remember the In Between except in fever dreams, and doesn't remember her final days in her old life. And despite being adopted by nobility, she is still just a female in her new kingdom, and females are objects. She does remembered she was planning to escape a bad life once before, now she has to figure out how to do it when she is a child and has no cards to play. The first part of this story, as Kate grows up in Norfolk, is setting us up for the world and follows a girl to adulthood. Has some abuse related triggers including NC references and assault. This is not a 'sassy female in a new world breaks all the rules and everyone loves her for it' story. In Norfolk, if a woman breaks the rules her outlook might include death. She just has to survive long enough to get away. But...will wherever she escapes to be any better? Early parts are serious drama. Not everything is explained about everything as we go. Later parts have more action (including battle violence and magical beasts), more (ahem) mature situations, and likely language.
